Cherries are rich in anthocyannins, which are the antioxidants that give fruits and vegetables their purple and blue colour. These compounds may reduce pain related to inflammation, arthritis and gout. Cherries also contain boron, which alongside magnesium and calcium may be beneficial for bone health. Eating tart cherries may also boost melatonin levels in your body, which may also be beneficial for sleep. Oats offer a slow release of energy, rich in minerals, B vitamins and soluble fibre (beta-glucans), beneficial for gut health. Soaking is an age-old tradition for preparing grains, which helps with the absorption of nutrients. Seeds provide an excellent source of protein, essential fats and phytoestrogens, which may help to balance energy levels, mood and hormones.
Place the oats in a pan, with the milk and water and salt.
Cook on a moderate heat, and stir occasionally until thick.
Meanwhile prepare the cherries, by placing them in a pan with maple syrup cinnamon. Bring to boil and turn the heat down to simmer for a few minutes until the sauce reduces slightly and thickens.
Toast seeds in a dry pan until they begin to turn golden and start to pop.
Spoon the porridge into bowls, topping with the hot cherries and seeds, and add a few orange segments if you fancy.
