Feel Good Focus -Simple Swaps to Detox our Homes

Detox your home

As a nutritionist, I help my clients eat well to stay well, however it doesn’t stop there. Taking a holistic approach to health and wellbeing means addressing all aspects of life that may not be serving us. This includes our home environments too. Many of us are spending more time at home than ever before, therefore it’s worth recognising how our home habits could be detrimental to our health and wellbeing.

Unfortunately, the convenience of modern living so often comes with toxic side effects, which can disrupt hormone balance, energy levels, immunity, and damage the health of our bodies and the world we live in. Some examples are Xenoestrogens found in food storage. Parabens and sulphates, found in many hair and beauty products, and toxic chemicals found in many of our household cleaning products. This list is far from exhaustive..

As with modern living too, there are so many options available to us that it can feel overwhelming, and hard to know where to begin. Sometimes just taking one intentional step in a chosen direction, can move us from overwhelm to action. The simplest achievable step to detox the home environment, may simply be sleeping in a well ventilated room, or to fill our homes with health giving plants. Swapping plastic food storage for glass or ceramic, or swap cling film for Eco Wraps.

I am always on the lookout for ethical brands, with excellent products, who are making it making it easier to create a healthy environment at home.

I’m excited to share some of my Favourite brands with you:

Natural Body Care

Our skin absorbs what we put on it, and unfortunately many personal care products can be full of hormone disrupting chemicals. The main culprits are parabens, phthalates and sodium lauryl/ laureth sulphate. And, if a product label mysteriously says ‘fragrance’ without further clarification, you can bet it’s not good news. Instead, look for labels that say, “no synthetic fragrances”.

It’s really worth checking the labels before you buy new products to ensure you’re not unnecessarily adding to your toxic load. Fortunately, the market is now filled with safer alternatives at practically every price point. You’ll find them not just in health food stores or specialist retailers but in many larger supermarkets, too.  You might like to download the app Think Dirty – Shop Clean on your phone so that you can scan the barcode of your existing products to see how they rate – and choose what you’ll ditch or at least buy different next time.

For over 40 years Neils yard have been crafting their products with the finest herbs, botanicals and essentials oils, using ethically sourced and sustainable ingredients.

ECO Cleaning Products with BIDE

BIDE is a new ECO Cleaning Products subscription service, set up by my sister in law, offering sustainable, environmentally friendly, convenient, and effective cleaning products. I love that all products are made in the UK and support local businesses and entrepreneurs.

Box contents can vary, but the starter pack that we got going with, contains eco dishwasher powder, compostable cloths, and scrubbie, 5 sachets to make up eco cleaning products for the kitchen, bathroom, floors and glass, dishwashing soap, and toilet cleaning bombs. Exciting to hear that Bide has recently been added to the UBUNTOO community of sustainability entrepreneurs too.

So thankful to a growing number of conscious companies who are making it easier for us to make healthy habits. Investing in products made by brands who’s values align with our own, means we are voting for what matters to us. It feels great to help the planet and support local businesses at the same time.

As always, reminder to self.. we’re aiming for progress over perfection every time. Sometimes I go all-in on Eco, and other times I know it’s not possible, and know that’s also fine.

I’d love to build this list, so if you know of any ethical brands, with excellent products, who are making it making it easier to create a healthy environment at home, please get in touch.
